Holidays 2006

For the 2006 holidays, the family (if you haven’t “met” the family members, you can do that on the Holidays 2000 page, or on the Omena page) did the traditional Thanksgiving in Lake St Louis at my Mom’s. With Pearson and family skiing at Christmas and my cousin Cathy hosting her immediate family in Chicago, Burr and Mom decided to do something different and come celebrate Christmas in Chicago so we could get as much of the family in one place as was possible this year.

Lisa, Pearson, and Brynne make a last minute grocery list (we seem to go to the store about 3 times a day) while Tim wisely stands clear.

College boy Josh was in full-on 007 mode.

Like the rest of us, Lisa finds Brynne endlessly amusing.

It was such a success last year that we made Burr bring up his deep fryer to give us another top notch bird.

Of course, cooking it is only half the battle, so John and Lisa help Burr with the carving.

Pearson had the excellent idea to use the still-hot grease in the turkey fryer to whip up some fresh homemade potato chips. They were damn good, and are going to make a repeat appearance, in larger numbers, the next time we can get Burr to fire up the fryer.

Fast forward to Christmas. The first night, Mom and Burr stayed downtown for the lake view, and I cared for the dogs. Owen very clearly missed Burr, and spent the whole night with his nose pressed against the door awaiting Burr’s return.

It turns out the family proclivity for procrastination is genetic, as Ellie and Janet’s last minute Christmas Eve wrap-fest shows. (I understand that the wrapping continued into the wee hours of Christmas day itself.)

Madeline really messed up her ankle (some barely believable story about jumping down the last few steps of a flight of stairs), so she was limited to lots of seated posing for pictures.

Sisters must not treat each other the way brothers do, as Sydney and Madeline were much nicer to each other than boys would have been.

Or perhaps Madeline’s injury and Sydney’s status as a recent college graduate (congratulations, Syd!!) had them acting more maturely than they otherwise might have...

Eventually we got down to the good stuff - dinner! Cathy really laid out an impressive spread. And, of course, we had the traditional tablecloth that everyone who makes Christmas Eve dinner signs - it had been far too long since this group was able to sign it the same year.

Christmas morning opened with the original WPIX Yule Log playing in the background (I am such a geek) while Tutu and Burr opened their stocking stuffers.

Being the youngest, the dogs get to open their presents first. And, like all Christmas morning revelers of that age, they were not inclined to share their toys.

I can’t believe the DEA would let such a product go to market.

Tutu wraps up the festivities by wrapping up her unwrapping (I feel a rap song coming on).
